Distance
Some recent events in my personal life have helped me re-focus on major themes in my work. I am invested in exploring the strange place between people by exaggerating the distance in making the object inanimate and unreal. We feel things for the unreal portraits, falsely feel like we understand. But our tendencies to love and idealize in an impossible way happens in our everyday lives: our...

Charleston
I moved to Charleston, South Carolina on October 31st and really love it so far. I am going to go out and take some pictures soon and post them maybe here or on my Flickr. The art scene seems pretty active here—which is nice. I’m busy working on workshop proposals and getting settled, but plan to have have the ball rolling in the next day or two.

da Vinci
I went to the High Museum today with my father to see its [kind of] new exhibit called “Leonardo da Vinci: Hand of Genius.” It was about time for us to go see another exhibit and thank God I had avoided the big Monet one all summer (sorry, Impressionist calendar lovers.) I keep thinking about the unfinished painting in the exhibit. It was still blocky where he had just figured out how...

This is where I plan to apply to use printing facilities and if I’m lucky teach a few classes when I move to Charleston in the spring. Very excited, hopes everything works out as well as it feels like it will.

One of my favorite artists: Kiki Smith →
Take some time to look through this flash website MoMA made for her exhibition there back in 2004. What I like about Kiki Smith is that her ideas move so well through all sorts of different media. Her choice of medium follows the content of the work-something I’m always trying to do.

Daily drawings
Daily drawings and paintings are all the rage on the internet lately and I tend to be on the computer more often than on the sketchpad. It’s the nature of being out of school, confused, and away from the studio. So I am going to try to put up at least one drawing every day. I’m deleting the photos of my puppy and all of that because you can call me or g chat me for those sort of...
